Welcome to Iulia’s Writing

Hello everyone and welcome to my Substack. I am Iulia Huiu. In case you are wondering, it is a Romanian name and it is pronounced Iulia - as in “You-Lia”, Huiu - as in “Who-You”. I live in Washington DC.

One thing to know about me is I love writing. I love how words unfold on a blank page and the power they have not to merely describe but to shape the world we live in. That’s why I want to use my writing for good, to challenge the impossible, to bring new perspectives and give away what I discovered throughout the years. I want to use my writing in service of democracy and on behalf of values.

One other thing about me is I like working with people and having them succeed in their endeavors. I am always excited to take on new challenges, and bold projects defying the predictible, while supporing others to do the same. I’ve been doing this as a strategy and communication consultant for more than 20 years, working with political leaders and electoral campaigns, later on as a coach in management and leadership, and more recently as a professor.

I teach “American Politics and Foreign Policy” at the National University for Political Science and Public Administration (SNSPA), Bucharest. I have my own consulting company in Washington DC, called Great Empowerment Consulting, specialized in strategy implementation and communication for individual leaders, companies and organizations committed to a quantum leap in performance rather than an incremental increase.

I was a Personal Adviser to the Prime-Minister of Romania between 2005 and 2008, a Presidential Adviser and Speech writer for the current President of Romania between 2014 and 2017, and I spent hundreds of hours on campaign trails in all kinds of elections dealing with strategy and communication. Between 2017 and 2022 I was a Diplomat at the Embassy of Romania to the United States.

What to expect on Iulia’s Writing

While I focus mainly on politics and the current events, on Iulia’s Writing I will occasionally address other areas like strategic management, performance and leadership. In my professional career I get to wear multiple “hats” - academic, consultant, analyst. Rather than choosing only one perspective and staying confined to a niche, I put them all together, to complement and enrich each other. I won’t shy away from personal insights and stories either, if they add value and perspective to the most current debates.

I am also writing about my city and my community, Washington DC. Considering the myriad of negative stereotypes about this place, the 700.000 people who live and work, get married and take their kinds to school, got to church or to hospital in Washington DC (and have very little to do with the federal government) are easily forgotten. I want to show a different story of our nation’s Capital. The story of a unique place, with unique people, who deserve to be fully represented in Congress and respected for who they are.
